Due to injuries at some key positions, several players new to the team this year will see time for the Dallas Cowboys. Most notably, the defensive secondary and receiver positions will be affected.
Multiple injuries to wide receivers have opened the door for rookie Mike Jefferson to see some playing time. He was signed to the active roster from the practice squad this week and will likely see time in long yardage situations. Isaiah Stanback is questionable with a shoulder problem and will be a game time decision as to how much he will play.
Because of this I am looking for the Cowboys to incorporate other positions into the passing game more than usual. Look for Marion Barber and Felix Jones to be in the game together at times. Both running backs are excellent receivers too. Also, look for formations with multiple tight ends throughout the game. Martellus Bennett will see extensive playing time at tight end and Jason Witten will probably be asked to line up in the slot occasionally too.
On the defensive side of the ball, look for Mike Jenkins, Adam Jones and Orlando Scandrick to split time that is left open by injured cornerback Terrence Newman. Although he will also be a game time decision I don’t expect Newman to play much and it looks like Roy Williams will not be in the game for 3rd down passing situations. Williams had trouble last year dropping back in coverage in crucial situations.
The Cowboys first game at Cleveland this week will reveal what kind of character they have on both sides of the ball. Even this is one of the most talented teams ever in Dallas, they have already seen their share of adversity with pre-season injuries. I am excited to see the young guys step up and prove that the belong on America’s Team!
