Stephen McGee Will Shine for the Cowboys This Week

The Dallas Cowboys 3rd string quarterback, jersey number 7 in your program, Stephen McGee doesn’t get a chance to shine very often, but this Thursday against Miami he will. As most of the starters will get a rest to let the backups play, he will get plenty of playing time.

The Texas A&M Aggie quarterback has seen precious little action in his one year plus with the club, but they obviously see something they like. He stuck with the team throughout last year and seems poised to hang on again moving into the regular season.

He has a strong arm and enough intelligence to play in the NFL, but it is hard for him to get any game experience playing behind two seasoned veterans.

Keep a close eye on McGee this week against the Dolphins. He will be making a statement and I’m guessing it will be a good one!

Cowboys Preseason Injury Report

With 3 games of the preseason under their belt, the Dallas Cowboys have a pretty long list of injuries. Luckily most of the players are healing and will be available to play by early in the season.

Of the current starters who are missing time in the preseason due to injury, the offensive line has been hit particularly hard. Marc Colombo is out for another week, but should be ready to go for week 1 of the regular season against Washington. Kyle Kosier will probably take a little longer to heal and will probably miss a game or two once the season starts.

Dez Bryant is also still out with an ankle issue but has begun practicing. He may be available for the last preseason game at home against Miami, but since most of the starters will sit out that game it is hard to say whether Wade Philips will want to play him then or not. He will probably gradually be worked into the rotation slowly once the regular season starts. Look for him to make an impact in the second half of the season and hopefully be a big part of a Cowboys playoff run.

On the defensive side of the ball, Keith Brooking and Marcus Spears are healing and will be ready to go when the regular season begins against the Redskins. Gerald Sensabaugh will probably be ready by then, but his shoulder may require surgery at some point.

In all, it looks like the Cowboys will enter the regular season fairly healthy. We’ll see how the starters do this week against the Texans in the final test for most of the starters. We hope to not add any more names to this list.

Cowboys Doug Free Solid Start

The Cowboys looked pretty good overall for game 1 of the pre-season tonight against the Bengals. The offensive and defensive starters looked solid, but special teams have a long way to go.

The starting offense looks to be in mid season form. Doug Free could not have looked better in his debut as the starting left tackle, he did nothing but solidify his position. On the other hand, his competition for that spot, Alex Barron looked slow and rusty. I don’t expect this to change, Doug Free will be your starter unless he gets hurt.

Felix Jones was saved by a defensive penalty when he fumbled at the goal line, but don’t think the coaches will give him a pass. The Cowboys subsequently failed to score from the 1 yard line in 3 plays. Looks like the red zone offense needs some work.

The defense was solid. Not much to say here. Against a very good Bengals offense, both the first and second string made stop after stop. Chad Ochocinco and T.O. were very quiet tonight. Looks like the D are picking up right where they left off at the end of last season.

Special teams was not good. Several penalties, a long punt return and a missed field goal are the highlights here. Oh, and Titus Ryan broke his thumb. On the bright side, David Buehler did make 3 field goals, we just need to see some accuracy on the longer field goal attempts and he could be the starter for years to come.

Cowboys Training Camp Update

Heading into the Dallas Cowboys first pre-season game tonight versus the Cincinnati Bengals there are a few interesting tidbits for you to keep an eye on.

First, with the injury to Dez Bryant I have been keeping an eye on the other wide receivers to see who will survive roster cuts. This week Titus Ryan is listed as the Cowboys #1 kick and punt returner and probably the #6 WR, with Bryant out. I don’t see the Cowboys carrying more than 6 receivers, so when Bryant comes back either Kevin Ogletree or Titus Ryan will have to go. This doesn’t look good for Ogletree, and I know a lot of you are big fans of his so look for good things from him in the pre-season!

Second, the Cowboys secondary will get some good work against the Bengals’ strong receiving corps. Keep an eye on the safeties in particular, as this was a weak point in an otherwise strong Defense returning from last year. Also, with the groin injury to Marcus Spears, the Cowboys will be taking a very close look at some young linemen. Keep an eye on Junior Siavii and Josh Brent, they will be getting a lot of playing time tonight.

Jerry Jones Selling The Cowboys?

Q: first of im a big dallas fan my questions are why dose the owner get all these old choaches from? second more of a comment the people he should of kept he lets go i think some one new should buy the team and get reiad of himits not the coaches or players messing up it the owner buying the wrong players heck i can do better actually any one can thank you howard f mochrie

There are many people who agree with you in thinking that Jerry Jones should keep his hands out of the player personnel issues. But guess what? That is NEVER going to happen.

Jerry and his sons live for making those type of decisions and, believe it or not, they are very smart businessmen. The team is worth more than almost any other sports franchise in the world and the value grows every year.

To answer your question, he gets some of the old coaches from the recycling heap, but I assure you that the Cowboys have many coaches that are respected throughout the league. They do seem to have trouble getting the right mix of players and coaches but with the moves this offseason, maybe they are taking on more of Wade Phillips' personality…for better or worse!
