The Dallas Cowboys have never been short on high strung athletes who have a big ego. Martellus does fit the mold. But, if he doesn’t learn to work a little and listen to more experienced players and coaches, his stint in the NFL will be a short one.

Coming from Texas A&M, this is a bit surprising. Most players come out of the school with a strong work ethic. He just may have enough talent to overcome it though. Maybe Terrell Owens can teach him how he made it work!

The new HBO series “Hard Knocks: Training Camp with The Dallas Cowboys” started tonight. If you didn’t catch it I’m sure there will be several repeats every week. The show airs every Wednesday at 9pm central time.

I thought it was pretty interesting but I would have loved to see more of the players and a little less of Jerry Jones. I am sure it was written into the contract that he must get his face time.

They pointed out on the show that Roy Williams will be wearing a new number this year, #38. I guess he is trying to shed the skin of his former safety play and turn over a new leaf? Whatever! I do know that it will help the entire secondary to have Dave Campo as their coach this year. He is a defensive guru and to have him focusing on the defensive backs will be a huge help.

The show pointed out a few hazing incidents where the veteran players put the rookies through the ringer. It seemed all in fun, hopefully they didn’t get too out of hand but Boys will be Boys.

When you get a chance, check it out and let me know your thoughts. My overall take on the show was, it was funny but I would have liked to see more substance. But, anything Cowboy is good in my book.

After a relatively quiet first day of training camp for the Cowboys, Friday night brings some good news. Team executive Stephen Jones announced that first round picks Felix Jones and Mike Jenkins have agreed to terms and will sign on the dotted line Saturday morning.

Both players will probably miss Saturday mornings workout but should be ready for the afternoon practice scheduled for 3:30 pm.

Today’s workout was mostly a barometer for the coaches to make sure the players are ready to go. Tomorrow will see more normal drills and begin the process of preparation for the regular season.

To stay up to date, check back here often and to listen to the daily press conferences go to the Dallas Cowboys media center.

Well, the Fourth of July has come and gone, and that can only mean one thing…Dallas Cowboys Training Camp is only a few weeks away! The Cowboys’ players will arrive in Oxnard, California on July 24th and begin practicing on July 25th at 2:30pm. Here is a schedule, if you’re in the area be sure to check them out.

Heading into training camp, there are plenty of questions to be answered. At WR fans are curious as to whether Terry Glenn will be able to step back in and help or if we will need to depend on one of the new recruits. Glenn and the Cowboys have trying to work out details of his contract. The team doesn’t want to guarantee Glenn a large salary if he is unable to play. We’ll see how that works out pretty soon.

Adam “I will honor his wishes and not mention the P word” Jones’ ability to play…or not…will only create more questions in the defense. If he does start at right cornerback, Anthony Henry, will need to find a new place. Henry needs to be a regular so would the Cowboys try to move him to the other side, or maybe to safety? Will Roy Williams figure out how to fit into the defensive scheme, or will he become a part time player?

These are just a few of the many questions we will look to have answered. Oh! Don’t forget, this years Training Camp will be featured on the HBO special sports series, “Hard Knocks“. The show will begin airing on August 6th every Wednesday at 9pm central time. I believe they will show 5 or 6 episodes leading up to the beginning of the regular season…I can’t wait!

Well we had 2 nice pieces of news coming out of Dallas Cowboys headquarters today. Jerry Jones has signed Terrell Owens to a new, 4 year contract and the NFL has cleared Pacman Jones to begin working out with the team!

In a surprise to most followers of the team, owner Jones has given T.O. a brand new contract that should keep him with the Cowboys for a few more years. Owens reportedly will receive in the neighborhood of $12.9 million as a signing bonus. This came as a surprise because Terrell still has a year left on his contract, but apparently Jones didn’t want negotiations to be a distraction during the season so he broke out his fat checkbook…again.

Other good news earlier in the day came from league headquarters. Roger Goodell announced that Pacman Jones is clear to participate in the teams’ offseason workouts, training camp and pre-season games. He did participate in the OTA workouts today, the 7th of the teams 12 scheduled. Goodell also stated that he will make a decision on Jones’ eligibility for the regular season by September 1st. So, Pacman had better be on his best behavior ALL summer!

I don’t know about you but I am excited about both of these developments. Jerry seems to be getting all his ducks in a row in preparation for the Cowboys last season at Texas Stadium and for the beginning of a new era next season when they open thier new state of the art stadium in Arlington.

They will be running out soon, so if you plan on making it to any of the games this season you should get your tickets now. Of course, since this will be the Cowboys last season in Texas Stadium, and they are a front runner to represent the NFC at Super Bowl 43, tickets will be hard to come by.

This season the Cowboys will play host to the usual division opponents Washington, Philadelphia and the N.Y. Giants. In addition to those 3, Cincinnati, Tampa Bay, San Francisco, Seattle and Baltimore will pay a visit to Texas Stadium.

The Cowboys will travel to play their divisional rivals as well as Cleveland, Green Bay, Arizona, St. Louis and Pittsburgh. This schedule should pose a strong challenge for the team that coach Wade Phillips hopes to lead to its first playoff victory in over a decade.

Next season the team will move into its new state of the art stadium and Cowboys Football Tickets will be at an even higher premium. Loyal Cowboy fans must pay a $100 per seat non-refundable deposit…just to get on a waiting list for 2009 season tickets. But if you are like me, that is a small pittance to pay to see our team!

The Dallas Cowboys draft picks didn’t really surprise anyone as they focused on running backs and cornerbacks. And, as usual, Jerry Jones was wheeling and dealing, but it has been an interesting week as Cowboy fans waited to see Jerry’s next move.

After a few months of conjecture, the Adam “Pacman” Jones trade finally came together. Tennessee received the Cowboys’ fourth round pick this year and could get their sixth round pick next year depending on Pacman’s availability.

The Cowboys brass is obviously not convinced the Jones will be able or available to fill their needs at cornerback. Dallas took Mike Jenkins, cornerback out of South Florida, with the 25th pick in the first round of the draft. He should be able to step in and make an impact this year, although he won’t be asked to start right away. They also took cornerback Orlando Scandrick, Boise State, in the fifth round. He was a 3 year starter who bypassed his senior season to join the NFL.

Jerry Jones also picked 2 running backs in the draft. Felix Jones of Arkansas was taken in the first round as expected. He will fill the hole vacated by Julius Jones who was not re-signed by the Cowboys. They also took Tashard Choice of Georgia Tech in the fourth round. He should be able to take on some of the kick return duties as well as back up the running backs.

The other 2 draft choices Dallas made were Martellus Bennett, a tight end from Texas A & M, and Erik Walden a defensive end from Middle Tennessee State. After trading Anthony Fasano the Cowboys needed to fill his roster spot and were excited to grab Bennett in the second round. Walden, their sixth round pick, is more of a gamble. Drafted as a defensive end, he is likely to be moved to linebacker to fit into Wade Phillips’ defensive scheme.

So, looking forward to the beginning of rookie mini-camp this Friday, we’ll see how these draft picks along with a crop of a dozen or so rookie free agents will pan out, at least for now. But according to the Cowboys’ owner, Jerry Jones is “very pleased with the players we’ve drafted.” With all these pieces added, the Cowboys will surely remain one of the favorites to represent the NFC in next February’s Super Bowl!

As you know, tomorrow is the NFL Draft and for us avid Cowboys fans the waiting is almost over. Well actually, Jerry Jones has already used his 4th round pick.

This week Jerry and the Tennessee Titans ironed out details for the Dallas Cowboys to retain the rights to all-world cornerback Pacman Jones. Of course, this was no huge surprise and as I have stated before using a 4th round pick for a proven superstar player is really a no brainer.

But that is just the beginning of the fun for our Cowboys. They have 2 first round picks and since Jerry’s boys have a solid history in finding value in the first round, I am excited.

Now, I was thinking that the Cowboys would go after a cornerback and a wide receiver in the first round, but since Pacman fills the cornerback need I’m thinking the will look for a running back instead.

Felix Jones will probably still be around for Dallas’ first pick at number 22. Being an Arkansas Razorback gives him one foot in the door, even if he was only the second best RB on his team. Look for Jerry Jones to grab him if he is still available in this spot.

The Cowboys also have the number 28 pick and will probably go after the top speed wide receiver available. DeSean Jackson from California fills this need very well. He should be able to take some pressure off Terrell Owens working from the slot.

Dallas also has a second round pick, number 61 on day 1 of the draft. Depending on who is left available you can expect them to take an offensive lineman or a quarterback.

There you go, day 1 of the Dallas Cowboys draft will be eventful and could perhaps decide their fate as the next dominant team of the NFC. Come on Jerry, make us proud!

This week the 32 teams of the NFL will agonize over who to take and where to take them. Jerry Jones will be celebrating his 20th draft as the Dallas Cowboys owner. I say, “screw the draft Jerry, stick with known commodities”.

With 2 first round picks Jerry finds himself in the enviable position of leverage on draft day. But why not trade those picks for already established players to fill some pressing needs.

Need a young wideout to take some pressure off Terrell Owens and be able to stretch the defense? How about Chad Johnson? The Bengals claim that he isn’t on the block, BUT Jerry knows that everyone has a price. I think Chad is looking to leave but is trying not to rock the boat too much and lose face. Keep an eye on this one.

How about a cover corner more skills than anyone at this position since Deion? Pacman Jones would be a huge gamble, but the payoff could be a Super Bowl ring. He is that good. Unfortunately he is indefinitely suspended by the NFL because he has a rap sheet longer than Troy Polamalu’s hair.

Sure, there are talented young athletes available in the draft to fill these positions but why not trade some picks for a proven talent? Come on Jerry, pull the trigger…heck pull it twice. The Cowboys would become THE team to beat in the NFL in 2008.

While Jerry Jones is busy trying to decide if he will pretend like he doesn’t really want to go after Pacman Jones, the Tennesee Titans are busy trying to squeeze every ounce of value they can out of him.

On the one hand, Pacman is an often arrested, risky investment, who is currently suspended by the league. There is no certainty when he will be allowed to play in the NFL again, although most think it will be sometime during the 2008 season.

Everyone knows that the Cowboys need help in their secondary and Jones is one of, if not the best at what he does.

So, why not give up a draft pick for him? He is a great player, and the asking price is small. But his downside is immense. Jerry Jones is scared to death of how Pacman Jones might tear apart the Cowboys locker room.

Then again, maybe they need a little shaking up? OK, this would be a lot of shaking up.

Jerry is known for taking a chance on players, but this is really a no-brainer. The only question is, how much is he willing to give up for a great player who may never play for your team? My guess is, we’ll find out soon.
