Q: Why are the Cowboys always one of the teams that are playing on Thanksgiving?

A: The Detroit Lions and Green Bay Packers played each other on Thanksgiving day for many years. In the mid 1960′s, as the NFL grew bigger and gained more national media attention, they wanted to add a second game to their Thanksgiving day schedule.

No other NFL teams had interest in playing a mid-week game near the end of the season. However, Tex Schram the Cowboys’ GM at the time, saw it as a chance to put his 5 year old team in the national spotlight. So, on November 24, 1966 the Cowboys played the Cleveland Browns and came away with their first Thanksgiving Day victory.

It worked out so well that the Dallas Cowboys have become a big part of many football fans holiday celebration and it certainly hasn’t hurt the Cowboys desire to become America’s Team.

Stephen McGee Will Shine for the Cowboys This Week

The Dallas Cowboys 3rd string quarterback, jersey number 7 in your program, Stephen McGee doesn’t get a chance to shine very often, but this Thursday against Miami he will. As most of the starters will get a rest to let the backups play, he will get plenty of playing time.

The Texas A&M Aggie quarterback has seen precious little action in his one year plus with the club, but they obviously see something they like. He stuck with the team throughout last year and seems poised to hang on again moving into the regular season.

He has a strong arm and enough intelligence to play in the NFL, but it is hard for him to get any game experience playing behind two seasoned veterans.

Keep a close eye on McGee this week against the Dolphins. He will be making a statement and I’m guessing it will be a good one!

Cowboys Doug Free Solid Start

The Cowboys looked pretty good overall for game 1 of the pre-season tonight against the Bengals. The offensive and defensive starters looked solid, but special teams have a long way to go.

The starting offense looks to be in mid season form. Doug Free could not have looked better in his debut as the starting left tackle, he did nothing but solidify his position. On the other hand, his competition for that spot, Alex Barron looked slow and rusty. I don’t expect this to change, Doug Free will be your starter unless he gets hurt.

Felix Jones was saved by a defensive penalty when he fumbled at the goal line, but don’t think the coaches will give him a pass. The Cowboys subsequently failed to score from the 1 yard line in 3 plays. Looks like the red zone offense needs some work.

The defense was solid. Not much to say here. Against a very good Bengals offense, both the first and second string made stop after stop. Chad Ochocinco and T.O. were very quiet tonight. Looks like the D are picking up right where they left off at the end of last season.

Special teams was not good. Several penalties, a long punt return and a missed field goal are the highlights here. Oh, and Titus Ryan broke his thumb. On the bright side, David Buehler did make 3 field goals, we just need to see some accuracy on the longer field goal attempts and he could be the starter for years to come.

Jerry Jones Selling The Cowboys?

Q: first of im a big dallas fan my questions are why dose the owner get all these old choaches from? second more of a comment the people he should of kept he lets go i think some one new should buy the team and get reiad of himits not the coaches or players messing up it the owner buying the wrong players heck i can do better actually any one can thank you howard f mochrie

There are many people who agree with you in thinking that Jerry Jones should keep his hands out of the player personnel issues. But guess what? That is NEVER going to happen.

Jerry and his sons live for making those type of decisions and, believe it or not, they are very smart businessmen. The team is worth more than almost any other sports franchise in the world and the value grows every year.

To answer your question, he gets some of the old coaches from the recycling heap, but I assure you that the Cowboys have many coaches that are respected throughout the league. They do seem to have trouble getting the right mix of players and coaches but with the moves this offseason, maybe they are taking on more of Wade Phillips' personality…for better or worse!

Fire Tony Romo?

Q: WHy is Jerry Jones so blind? It wasnt T.O.’s fault we lost the past 2 playoffs. That rests soley on Tony Homo’s Hands. He threw an interception last year. And the year before, he fumbled a field goal. It is Tony’s Fault. Not T.O. T.O. made the team batter. I hate the way Jerry Jones is runnin’ the team!!! He is Just a Owner, Not a Coacj. I know he wants them to win. But Jerry, do like other owners do sit on ur but and watch em. And let the Coaches work. B.T.W, get rid of tony!

A: Yep, you are probably right. The Cowboys are better off without Tony Romo. Just look how they have done in the past decade with all the other standout QBs on their roster. Drew Bledsoe and Vinny Testaverde were the only two decent QBs they had, and that isn't saying much.

Or have you forgotten Quincy Carter, Chad Hutchinson, Anthony Wright, Ryan Leaf & Clint Stoerner?

Romo is the only quarterback since Troy Aikman to lead the team, so don't put the blame on him.

Jerry Jones is one of the best owners in sports. Don't kid yourself. Seriously, the Dallas Cowboys are not some other team, he can't "do like other owners" if he wants to continue to build on the legacy that is the Dallas Cowboys. He carries a huge responsibility on his shoulders as the owner of the Cowboys and he has done a great job.

Have you ever heard ANY of his players complain that he meddles too much? I can't think of one. Only the media and Cowboys haters think Jerry should just "watch em". His players love him and so do the true fans!
